GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE February, 1990

THE GOOD NEWS

This space has been donated to MCC by the Chronicle, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Chronicle staff or management.

Emmuanuel Metropolitan Community Church is proud to have raised enough money to send Reverend Kathi Jo Williams-Smith to Houston, Texas in late January to attend two conferences sponsored by the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches. (UFMCC) and its denominational university, Samaritan College. Emmanuel has been a Fellowship of UFMCC since 1987.

MCC's second annual benefit auction was held January 6, 1990 at the church at 10034 Lorain Ave. Fifty-three area merchants donated memorable items including a two-hour tour of Cleveland aboard Lolly the Trolley, a rebirthing class on alternative healing, a hot air balloon ride for two in Wadsworth, Ohio, tickets for the Cleveland Orchestra, Karamu House, the Cleveland Ballet and the Cleveland Playhouse. Various restaurants and bars donated gift certificates or tabs. Among the more unusual items auctioned were a cheesecake, a half-sheet cake, a color portrait sitting and a custom stained glass window donated by the Reverend herself. MCC raised over $1600; this surpassed their goal of $1500. MCC wishes to extend their thanks to everybody who helped organize the auction and especially the merchants and artists who donated their time and talents to make it a big success.

Reverend Kathi Jo attended both conferences held simultaneously the weekend of January 19-25. One conference pertained to the challenges in pastoral care for people with AIDS (PWAS) and the fact that more and more

people are living longer with AIDS. The other conference was clergy conference for successful building skills for leadership in ministry.

Reverend Kathi Jo will hold a seminar discussing AIDS in late February or early March. This will be open to the public, free of charge and held at the church. For more information regarding this, please contact the church at 216651-0129 or feel free to stop by and visit. Reverend Kathi Jo's office hours are by appointment only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the hours of 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday service. are held at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. A children's service is held during the morning service and offers children religious study at their level. Bible study classes are held Wednesdays at the church at 7:00 p.m. and covers homosexuality and the scriptures. A person doesn't have to be a member of the church to attend any or all functions or to receive the Eucharist. Everyone is welcomed to worship at Emmanuel.

Membership classes are scheduled every alternate Saturday and are held at the church at 10:00 a.m. There are four classes required to become a member and are held in an on-going cycle.

Good News for MCC will be making announcements concerning upcoming as well as past events:

A Homecoming Dance will be held February 24 from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. There will also be a potluck on February 25 after the Service. Listings of upcoming events will also be listed in Charlie's Calendar.

Let's work together to be a community united, and not a community divided, as we continue to share God's love with all people.
